FAQ

What is an Operator Extension?

The Operator is used in the Voicemail system to route callers away from a mistaken voicemail.

When you reach a voicemail, you'll be prompted to press a key to reach the operator, and that will route you to the defined operator extension.

Most companies set this to a receptionist/controller role, but you can also assign it to a Forwarding Extension that then points at an IVR or similar.

Why is it my first extension? I need ext. 100

The original operator extension is solely created for the initial setup on the phone system, thus it takes the 100/1000/10000 slot, and it can and should be deleted once you have made another operator user.

You can swap the operator to the System Owner temporarily, then delete and recreate 100, and then move it back if 100 is suppose to be your operator.

We do not recommend using the existing operator extension, as it has settings defined that may break normal user operations.

Can I delete it?

Yes, you can delete the default “100 | Operator Extension”, once you've assigned the Operator role elsewhere

Why Is It Listed Under My First Extension?

The original operator extension is solely created for the initial setup on the phone system, but is not a secure extension and should be changed.

Making Extension Changes

If you are needing to re-use an extension number, we recommend deleting the existing extension with the desired extension number and re-creating the extension with the correct information. More information on this can be found in our Repurposing User Extensions article

Adjusting Operator Extension

Once all extensions are configured, the operator extension will need to be adjusted to the extension that will be able to accept calls that transfer out of voicemail or other menus.

  1. Log into the bvoip phone system.
  2. Click on the Extensions drop-down menu.
  3. Go to the Extension subsection.
  4. Click the Set Operator Extension button. The Select the Operator Extension pop-up will appear.
  5. Expand the drop-down menu to select which extension should be the operator extension by clicking the green plus sign to the right.
  6. Click the Save button to close the window.

Once the Operator Extension has been changed, the original 100 extension can be removed, if desired.
